Like me, you may have been eagerly awaiting new music from the The Wombats for the looongest time. Well wait no longer as today they released the new video for single 'Greek Tragedy'. You will not be disappointed! The new album Glitterbug will be out in April, I am counting down the days till then!
Just a warning it gets a little graphic near the end.
The Wombats - Greek Tragedy
Lake Street Dive are perhaps my favourite
discovery of the year. They are an indie-jazz/soul outfit hailing from Boston.
All four members met while attending the New England Conservatory of Music
in 2004 with the idea of creating unrestricted country music. Since
formation, the genre has differed slightly from that original intention however
still remains loyal to its roots.
Bad Self Portraits was released 2014. It is not the bands first release but it
is by far their greatest. They've really come into their own sound, "We
want it to sound like the Beatles and Motown had a party together" says
drummer Mike Calabrese. The end product is a remarkably successful endeavour to
obtain that. A perfect combination of old and new.
13 seconds into the title track on the record, a self-deprecating ode to a lost love, Rachel Price's vocals capture
and enrapture your attention. Track two ('Stop Your Crying') and four ('Rabid
Animal') are my current favourites but it is the sort of album that continues
to produce a new favourite on every listen.
Price's vocals, however impressive they are, do not overshadow the band. The insightful lyrics and energetic backing melodies showcase
this group as a whole, not a one woman show. And besides, who could ignore Kearney's
upright bass. If you could, you wouldn't want to.
Lake Street Dive are a breakout band on the rise and I for one want to be part
of the explosively soulful journey.
There are so many talented ladies out there demanding our attention, and
they sure as hell have mine. These are just a few that have been
hogging my listening time recently.
Ryn Weaver - This chick is sick. That just about sums her up. She splits her time between NY and LA working on various projects including some for other artists (at the mo' with Charli XCX). Her Promises EP is pretty phenomenal for a debut, be sure to tease yourself with her hit OctaHate first. You'll be hooked.
The entire thing is available for streaming on soundcloud... Yay!!
Demi Louiseis a local gem. She's from Melbourne but is currently in the UK playing various shows and gaining a crowd. I came across her stuff at work the other day and she's got butt-loads of potential. Have a lil listen to Ruins. Shit clip (sorry bae!) but pretty song.
VÉRITÉ - Not sure if the capitols are compulsory but I'll include them for emphasis on her name cause she deserves it. Vérité's synth pop grooves get better with every listen. We are on the verge of something big here people! Weekend
breaks down into a distinct rock and roll beat before jumping back into
it's pop rhythm core. The lyrics "We can fall in love for the weekend"
are described by the singer herself as "an
ode to the nostalgia of how, despite how sick we were or how insane
things get, we can take moments from the craziest times and glorify them
as being absolutely perfect.” And perfect it is. “‘Weekend’ winds up sitting in a weird place for me, caught between
the exhilaration of ‘you could bring me to life’ and the reality that we
were only fooling ourselves into thinking we were alive while we
distract ourselves from reality.” P.S If you like her facebook you get two free downloads.. FREEBIES!! YAY! https://www.facebook.com/veriteohverite
Meg Mac - I should have blogged about dear old Meg MONTHS ago but better late than never. She was discovered on Triple J's unearthed and won herself a spot on the Falls festival line up last year. Since then there has been no stopping her burgeoning star power. I won't say too much on her now as I will be seeing her live in a couple of weeks and will review her properly then. In the meantime though please acquaint yourselves with this soulful number to fuel your jealousy at my attending her sold out show. =)
There has been much speculation over the years about who Dylan was referring to in this song. It could be Joan Baez, his fans or even Dylan himself. Thankfully the mystery remains intact.
'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' was the final song recorded for Bob Dylan's 1965 albumBringing It All Back Homeand has been covered hundreds of times by some of the most renowned artists around the world. Notable covers include Joni Mitchell, The Animals, The Byrds and Grateful Dead.
Following a consistent theme of ending his albums with a heartbreaking tale, 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' could just as easily be construed as a song about new beginnings, and not just final chapters.
"Strike another match, go start a new
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.
"
"I had carried that song around in my head for a long time and I remember that when I was writing it, I'd remembered a Gene Vincent
song. It had always been one of my favorites, Baby Blue... 'When first I
met my baby/she said how do you do/she looked into my eyes and said/my
name is Baby Blue.' It was one of the songs I used to sing back in high
school. Of course, I was singing about a different Baby Blue." - Bob Dylan
