Humpday Flashback feat. Bob Dylan 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue'

There has been much speculation over the years about who Dylan was referring to in this song.  It could be Joan Baez, his fans or even Dylan himself. Thankfully the mystery remains intact.

 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' was the final song recorded for Bob Dylan's 1965 album Bringing It All Back Home and has been covered hundreds of times by some of the most renowned artists around the world. Notable covers include Joni Mitchell, The Animals, The Byrds and Grateful Dead.

Following a consistent theme of ending his albums with a heartbreaking tale, 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' could just as easily be construed as a song about new beginnings, and not just final chapters.

"I had carried that song around in my head for a long time and I remember that when I was writing it, I'd remembered a Gene Vincent song. It had always been one of my favorites, Baby Blue... 'When first I met my baby/she said how do you do/she looked into my eyes and said/my name is Baby Blue.' It was one of the songs I used to sing back in high school. Humpday Flashback (with a twist): Frank Sinatra 'That's Life'

Okay so I know I've posted the original of this in my Humpback Flashback section before but I came across this new mix the other day. I either love it or hate it. And am listening to it on repeat trying to make my mind up. I think I potentially love it as it doesn't mutilate the original, just adds a refreshing upbeat shadow to the primary melody.

Humpday Flashback feat. Blondie's Heart Of Glass

This week's flashback comes from the still lovely Deborah Harry and friends AKA Blondie!
These two have been making music together since the early 70's, if you overlook their brief hiatus from 1982-1997.
The band struggled through illness, addiction and financial mismanagement to become pioneers of the New Wave genre and give us popular hits such as One Way Or Another, Call Me and of course... Heart Of Glass.

Heart Of Glass was written by Harry and Guitarist Chris Stein. It featured on their 1978 record Parallel Lines. A chart topping disco/new wave hit, the single is ranked number 255 in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time. 

The song was not without it's fair share of controversy. The original lyrics were "Once I had a love, it was a gas. Soon turned out, it was a pain in the ass.' This did not sit well with radio's at the time so the lyrics were modified to what we hear today, "Soon turned out, had a heart of glass". Though the band did manage to keep one "pain in the ass". Perhaps it was this slight act of rebellion that assisted them when their fans started to make claims the band had 'sold out' due to the experimental disco vibe of the track.

Blondie addressed this controversy in their 1979 music video in which the band play around with disco balls. I love Harry's sheer indifference whilst singing in this clip. She's so effortlessly cool. Heart Of Glass was not actually filmed in New York's infamous Studio 54 as the clip would lead you to believe. 

Fun Fact: Blondie are the first ever international act to perform at a Australia's Homebake Festival.

Humpday Flashback feat. TLC 'Creep'

If there is one band I would wanna see in a hologram it's TLC. Of course only one-third of the group would need to use the technology (RIP Lisa), but there would be no point in a comeback tour without her. I think we can all agree that the rap part of Waterfalls is some of their finest work.

TLC had quite the turbulent career. Their unprecedented success was hindered by bancrupcy and ill managment before their final dissolution following the death of Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopez.

TLC remain to this day one of the biggest selling female groups of all time. They have paved the way for many artists thanks to the uniquely feminine touch they brought to the hip-hop/rap genre. Recently notable protégés include Australia's Iggy Azalea who started out in an all girl trio in rural New South Wales claiming to want to be the "Left Eye"of the group.

I've decided to include their 1994 Grammy Award winning single Creep from their (also Grammy Award winning) second album CrazySexyCool. The song samples "Hey Young World" by Slick Rick. The clip features Left Eye (crazy), Chilli (sexy) and T-Boz (cool),  lookin' cool as cupcakes in satin PJ's. I have a vague memory of my sister and I reenacting the clip dressed in our (way less cool) PJ's. Shame we don't have that on camera. Between the satin PJ's and the baggy outfits in the next scene this clip is so quintessentially 90's. It's perfect.

Humpday Flashback - Wings 'Maybe I'm Amazed'

Sir Paul McCartney's comeback band after The Beatles split consited of Sir Paul himself, wife Linda and Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine. WINGS had a number of other members throughout the years but suffered constant line up changes.

Maybe I'm Amazed is from their first released album McCartney and was dedicated to Linda. Paul wrote it in 1969 before The Beatles split. The track was recorded in Abbey Road Studios (which I have been inside!)

Fun fact: When Paul and Linda cameo on the Simpsons Paul says: "If you play Maybe I'm Amazed backwards, you'll find a recipe for a ripping lentil soup".

Humpday Flashback: Badfinger 'No Matter What'

Sorry for the delay folks! We are well and truly over the midweek hump but I feel like posting this anyway.

Better late than never! (Story of my life!!!)

Give the below a listen and see if it rings a bell. Badfinger released 'No Matter What' from their 1970 album No Dice. The song was famously covered by Def Leppard in 2005. A band with a sad history, the story of Badfinger involves bankruptcy, legal issues, depression and the eventual suicide of two of the founding members. 

This is one of their hits from when they were at the top and signed to Apple Records.

Humpday Flashback: Blind Melon's 'No Rain'

Headed back to September 1993 now, I was only 4 years old at the time but this is one is a favourite.
Blind Melon's single No Rain is from their self titled album and reached number 8 in Australia. It features the 'Bee Girl' who made her reappearance in Weird Al Yankovic's Bedrock Anthem... then it seems the acting jobs dried up. Poor wee little bee girl.

I am in London at the moment and while hitting up some op shops on Brick Lane i swear this song was following me! I've had it in my head ever since. Give ol' Stevie  a lil listen for old time sakes.

This song is the perfect blend of Aretha’s soulful tones and George Micheal’s undeniable rhythm.
